I went for a walk in my garden today. It’s super windy which makes the clouds move in layers. That’s one of my favourite things to see, when the clouds that are lower blow faster than the layers above. Have you ever noticed that?
When I looked down I saw more of my favourite things. Our wild strawberries are already rooting in. Those were a bonus we had not expected 8 summers ago, each year they’ve spread and been a wonderful treat to snack on. Our herb spiral is also coming back strong. Now to trim back the garden sage which always bushes up quickly. If anyone loves sage and would like some, please let me give you some. We also need to cull some wild oregano, that spreads like… well, wild. If anyone is looking for some perennial herbs let me hook you up.
For right now we’re not going to do so much other than a gentle clean up. Stomping down the dried stems and letting things come back as it gets warmer. I’ve never been in a rush to get out and make the yard look manicured. I prefer the more overgrown look that I know benefits many insects and pollinators. We will be trimming back many of our trees and bushes, which reminds me, anyone want a lilac bush? We need to dig it out, but don’t want to throw it away.
Well, I had not intended this to be an announcement of what plants we want to give away from our garden, but here you have it.
Here’s the list of projects we aim to get done this year: building more cold frames and fix existing raised beds. Add an elderberry bush on a new mound we’re putting in the back. Harvest more of our calendula and comfrey, which grows abundantly and is great for salves that my husband makes. Lastly, we aim to build a bike shed since our temporary one blew apart in a winter storm.
